Blaugrana are said to have enquired into the possibility of signing Reds and Holland centre-back Virgil Van Dijk, and the La Liga giants were met with the expected response in return.
The Netherlands international was one of the best footballers on the planet last season, with Virgil seemingly transforming Merseyside club’s team during his first full campaign with Liverpool. The defender was pivotal in the Reds attempts to win the Premier League title, as well as their successful pursuit of Champions League glory.
And it seems like van Dijk’s form last year has caught the eye of the Catalan club, as Barcelona had made a transfer enquiry in regards to the footballer’s availability. However, Blaugrana’s enquiry was shunned by the centre-back’s representatives, with the Spanish club than not bothering to pursue the footballer any further.
The response to Barcelona’s enquiry should not have been a surprise to anyone who knows just how important the player is to Merseyside club and their system. Dutch defender seems as happy as ever right now, and him leaving for any other club in the world looks like an impossibility at this moment in time.
We doubt Liverpool would’ve allowed Virgil to leave no matter which club came in for him, and rightly so given how good he’s been for Reds these past 18 months. Van Dijk is a regular member of the Oranje line-up and also helped them to reach the UEFA Nations League final, but they lost 1-0 with Portugal and missed the chance to win the title.
