Barcelona keep a close eye on £120,000-a-week Man United midfielder

Nemanja Matic is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a move in next summer’s transfer window. Serbia international has a little over 18 months left on his contract with Man United and could depart the Red Devils on a cut-price fee next year.

The 33-year-old midfielder joined the Red Devils from Chelsea in the summer of 2017 and has since proven to be a valuable asset for Man United. A consistent performer under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Matic has played 165 games, chipping in with four goals and eight assists along the way.

However, in the past year or so, Nemanja has been showing signs of age catching up to him. And with only over 18 months left on his Red Devils contract to run out, the Serbian midfielder could well be on his way out of Man United next summer if a renewal is not handed to the footballer.

This is where the Blaugrana come into the picture. The interest from the Catalan giants might come as a bit of a surprise considering Nemanja’s age. However, it does make sense for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, Barcelona chose not to bring in a midfielder this past summer despite selling Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig and loaning Miralem Pjanic out to Besiktas. As a result, bringing Nemanja in from Man United could help the Blaugrana with a short-term solution in midfield till Pablo Gavi and Nico Gonzalez are set to become indispensable figures.
