Atletico Madrid in the hunt for £110,000-a-week Chelsea striker

Atletico Madrid have turned their attention to the London giants centre-forward Olivier Giroud as a replacement for the outgoing Diego Costa in the winter transfer window. Diego Costa has come to an agreement with the La Liga side to terminate his contract early, with the contract due to expire at the end of the campaign.

Spain international will be available on a free transfer and the Gunners have been linked with a swoop for the striker. However, back in the Spanish capital, Diego Simeone is looking for a new centre-forward to replace Diego, despite him starting just two La Liga fixtures so far this season.

Simeone believes Olivier could be the man to do that job and is considering a move for the striker when the transfer window swings open at the start of January. France international is in the last year of his deal at London club, with his current deal expiring at the end of the campaign.

Giroud was out of the team at the start of the season but has been called upon more regularly in recent weeks, with summer signing Timo Werner struggling for goals. Olivier has notched three PL goals this campaign, all of which came in December as he proves his worth to manager Frank Lampard.

Given that the French centre-forward has started four league games over December, it looks unlikely Chelsea will let him leave in winter, but he may well be persuaded to move to La Liga for the first time on a free transfer in the summer.
