Arsenal want to keep £40,000-a-week midfielder amid several offers

Matteo Guendouzi’s transfer request was immediately turned down by Gunners chiefs when the player met with the club earlier this week, reports say. Arsenal manager disciplined France international for his actions in the defeat to Brighton, where he reportedly taunted opponents throughout the match and grabbed Neal Maupay by the throat.

The FA declined to take further action with Matteo, but Mikel Arteta axed the midfielder completely from the squad that beat Southampton on Thursday. Guendouzi met with Gunners chiefs this week to discuss his future and told them he wanted to leave the Emirates.

The 21-year-old midfielder is wary about regular game time, but he received an immediate no from officials in the room. The board told the French midfielder they have no intention or desire to sell him and reiterated their feeling that he would become a great footballer at the London club.

The Spanish manager was pressed on Matteo’s absence after his side’s victory over Southampton, but the Gunners manager refused to make any concrete statement. However, Mikel Arteta did suggest any player who didn’t come on board with his thinking could leave.

Matteo was signed by former manager Unai Emery from Lorient and it is not the first time he has clashed with Mikel Arteta. The London giants boss dropped Matteo in February after being left unimpressed with his attitude during the Gunners warm-weather training camp in Dubai.

Man United are tracking developments at London club, with the Norwegian coach interested in signing Matteo. The Gunners win over the Saints is their first since the Premier League restart and the London club take on Sheffield United on Sunday in the FA Cup in their next match.
