Arsenal turned down chance to sign €20m-rated England international

Paul Merson has questioned why Unai Emery didn’t try to add Fabian Delph this transfer window. England international left Man City to join Everton in July, but the Gunners were never linked with a transfer move for the footballers. Spanish manager prefers to give a chance to Joe Willock, who had excellent performances in this season.

Summer signing and Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is already impressed fans at Emirates Stadium, but Merson insists Fabian is an upgrade on London club’s current midfielders. ‘I look at him and wonder why Arsenal didn’t sign him,’ Merson said to SkySports.

‘He is better than the midfield three that played with Tottenham. ‘He could have played at left-back instead of Kolasinac on weekend. ‘I am a big fan of Fabian. He can play in certain positions and is an excellent signing for Everton.’

Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and starlet Matteo Guendouzi played in midfield for the Gunners against Spurs, with Spaniard coming on in the second half. Arsenal came back from two goals down after errors from Xhaka and shot-stopper Bernd Leno, while Fabian made his first Premier League start for the Toffees against Wolves.

The 29-year-old midfielder joined Everton from the Citizens with a €10m deal. He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Englishman has contracted with the Toffees until 2022, and his release clause is around €20m. He is a regular member of the Three Lions squad and also helped them to finish the 2018 Mundial in a fourth place.
