It proved to be a busy summer transfer window for the Gunners, Unai Emery, Raul Sanllehi and Edu. All the way up until deadline day on August 8. In total there has been six new signings at the London club, Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos, William Saliba, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz.
The latter was very much a surprise, but Spanish tactician was keen to sign a centre-back following the departure of Laurent Koscielny coupled with a poor defensive record across all tournaments last campaign. Links up until deadline day centred around Juventus’ Daniele Rugani as well as RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.
And another centre-back by the name of Robert Arboleda almost made a move to the Emirates Stadium. Ecuador international was viewed as an alternative to David Luiz in the build-up to transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs. Arboleda has contracted with Sau Paulo until 2022, and his release clause is around €10m.
In addition, the report states that the Gunners approached Sao Paulo three days before the window closed for a season-long loan deal with an option to buy. A staff member is reported to have said: “The Gunners approached us three days before the end of the transfer window in England.”
Although, for some reason, the deal hit a snag and Arsenal ended up signing Luiz from Chelsea for £8m. However, Nicola claims that Robert is still ‘for sale’ and it stays to be seen if the London club return for the 27-year-old when the winter transfer window opens in the new year.
