The London giants are targeting a move for Luka Jovic with Mikel Arteta keen on the Real Madrid centre-forward, according to reports. Arsenal could be in the market for a new centre-forward this summer with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s deal due to expire next year.
Serbia international, meanwhile, has struggled to make an impact since joining La Liga giants for £53m last summer. Luka has scored only two goals in 24 games so far for Los Blancos. But the Gunners are prepared to make their move if the Spanish club are willing to let Jovic leave on loan.
The report claims that Mikel views the 22-year-old player as the striker who can ‘confidently’ lead Gunners front-line as a ‘target man’. Chelsea and Spurs are also interested in the Serbian centre-forward. Last week, Rio Ferdinand urged Gunners to avoid signing Luka and target new defenders instead.
‘I think he’s someone who can add something to Arsenal. But I don’t believe Arsenal need a player in that position. Arsenal need centre-backs, get Arsenal a defender. Come and ask me and I’ll find you the right centre-backs who can go there. They need centre-halves who can defend and who can play as well.’
Luka earned a move to Real Madrid last summer after a fine campaign at Eintracht Frankfurt the season before. And after watching him play for Real this campaign, Campbell does not think he would be suited to Arteta’s style.”Well, does he fit in with what they do? I don’t think so,” he said. “At Arsenal, there’s an imbalance there.”
