Arsenal started negotiations with 19-year-old promising midfielder

The London giants have made an approach to land Fluminense midfielder Matheus Martinelli, according to reports in Brazil. The Spanish coach already has one eye on the summer transfer window and is working alongside technical director Edu to further bolster in midfield after splashing out £45m on Atletico Madrid’s Partey last October.

Mikel Arteta has made it clear he’s keen to sign Martin Odegaard on a permanent basis when the playmaker’s loan deal expires at the end of the season but Real Madrid are yet to make a final decision on the attacker’s future as he continues to impress in the Gunners colours.

Arsenal have therefore been forced to scour the market for potential alternatives should Norway international return to the Santiago Bernabeu and Fluminense’s Matheus, no relation to Gabriel, is firmly on the club’s radar.

The London giants have been scouting the 19-year-old midfielder in recent months and have opened negotiations with his entourage to gather more information and gauge whether he would be interested in a move to Arsenal.

However, the Gunners are yet to make contact with Fluminense over a potential bid for Matheus’ signature and the youngster stays fully focussed on establishing himself in Roger Machado’s first-team at the Maracana.

The reports suggests he is enjoying his time at Fluminense and is looking forward to competing in Copa Libertadores for the first time. The London giants are aware that the 19-year-old midfielder will not come cheap given he has a €40m in his contract at Fluminense.

The Brazilian midfielder made his first-team debut back in December and has scored three goals in 11 games in the Brazilian top flight this campaign.
