Real Madrid starlet Federico Valverde has confirmed that the Gunners turned down the chance to sign him back in the day before he ended up joining the La Liga giants.
Uruguay international has been in great form for the Los Blancos lately, something that has to lead to the midfielder cementing himself into Spanish club’s starting line-up in recent weeks.
Federico, who can be deployed as an attacking or central midfielder, has played ten games for Real Madrid so far this season, bagging one goal and one assist during that time.
It looks like Los Blancos have an absolute gem on their hands in the form of Valverde, however, it looks like it things could’ve all gone a lot different had the London club opted to add him a few years back.
Before completing a £5m move to La Liga giants back in 2016, the 21-year-old midfielder trained with Gunners, with the footballer himself even admitting this in a recent interview.
Speaking about the Arsenal’s interest in him, Uruguayan midfielder confirmed: “Arsenal asked about me when I was with Penarol, and I had travelled to practise with them.”
London club probably could’ve easily signed Federico for a similar fee Spanish club paid, a move that would’ve been seen as a bargain right now given how good the midfielder has been as of late.
The Spanish coach isn’t exactly blessed with a wealth of options to choose from in the centre of the park, thus you can assume Unai Emery is probably regretting his side’s decision not to bring Valverde to the Emirates permanently a few years ago.
