Arsenal leading race to sign 22-year-old Ligue 1 playmaker

The London giants will reportedly revive their pursuit of the transfer of Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar when the chance arises again in winter. Arsenal were in for France international during the summer but ultimately got their negotiating tactics with the Ligue 1 giants a little wrong as the agreement fell through

Still, it looks the Spanish boss has not given up on bringing Houssem to the London club as he’s going to be targeted again this January. In a boost for the Gunners, Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Aouar, with Kylian Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga their priorities instead.

This sounds promising for the Gunners, who will hope to get a clear run at the 22-year-old, who could be perfect to add some creativity to Arsenal. Despite a deadline day deal for Thomas Partey, Arsenal perhaps lack a real ballplayer in the middle of the park, and the Frenchman could be the perfect long-term replacement for loanee Dani Ceballos.

Houssem could also have done a job for a big club like the Los Blancos, who will soon need to think about replacing legendary midfield pair Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. However, they failed to reach a deal for Houssem before the transfer deadline. But that does not mean their interest has cooled.

According to reports earlier this week, Gunners could relaunch a bid for Houssem in winter if they can offload some other footballers first. However, they will face contest from a European giant for Aouar. Arsenal had a successful summer 2020 transfer window, bringing in the likes of Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes.
