Nacho Monreal is reportedly closing in on a move that will see him leave the Gunners after six years at the club. Spain international arrived at Emirates back in 2013 and has since become an essential member of the club, making a total of 250 appearances in all tournaments.
However, Nacho is expected to take a back-up role in the squad when new signing Kieran Tierney regains full fitness. The former Celtic defender is set to come back to full training after the international break, and reports in Spain suggest Monreal is ready to call time on his Gunners career with just one year remaining on his current contract.
Real Sociedad are incredibly keen to offer the 33-year-old left-back a way out and have put a two-year deal on the table with an option for a further year. Spanish defender himself is also supposedly enamoured with the prospect of a return to Sociedad, having been born not far away in Pamplona and having started his career with Osasuna.
Unai Emery has already confirmed that Nacho could leave and that negotiations would have to take place between footballer and coach. ‘Monreal made a huge match, and he’s a huge professional for us,” Spanish manager said after the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.
‘This is one issue we need to speak in the next few days because in Europe they don’t finish the transfer window yet, but we are going to talk about all the situations and the possibilities. ‘It not being healthy that we end two weeks ago in Europe because the squad is not completely closed for us.
