Arsenal in advanced talks with €20m-rated England international

The Gunners have made an offer to sign the Red Devils centre-back Chris Smalling in the summer transfer window, according to reports in Italy. England international was deemed surplus to requirements by the Norwegian boss last summer and the defender completed a season-long loan move to Roma as he looked to get his career back on track.

Smalling’s fantastic displays in Serie A have endeared him to supporters at the Stadio Olimpico, and Giallorossi are interested in making his deal permanent at the end of the 2019/20 season. However, Roma are likely to come up with stiff contest for his signature, with Spurs, Foxes, Toffees and Gunners all ready to test Man United’s resolve for Smalling.

Red Devils already have an offer on the table from Gunners for the 30-year-old defender, and Arsenal have ‘asked for information’ regarding a possible summer deal. The report suggests that the coronavirus pandemic has made a come back to England a ‘concrete option’ for Chris considering the distance between him and close family members.

Gunners have already signed young Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba who will arrive at Arsenal this summer, but Spaniard is determined to add another centre-back to his squad over the coming months which has seen the English centre-back emerge as a serious target.

Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Frankfurt defender Evan N’Dicka are also firmly on Arsenal’s radar. The Red Devils are demanding a fee of at least £25m for Chris which has ‘shocked’ Roma. The Giallorossi had hoped to secure a permanent deal with an offer of nearly £20m after initially enquiring over an £18m fee for Smalling.
