Arsenal held negotiations with €40m-rated Bundesliga centre-back

Gunners and other clubs have reportedly been told to pay £87m to seal the transfer of RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano. U21 France international looks a huge talent and has been linked with several big clubs recently, most notably Arsenal, who could do with a top young defender signing like him to replace flops like Sokratis and Mustafi.

Dayot recently was linked with Arsenal, and David Ornstein confirmed in a Q&A session that they are interested in the centre-back. It’s easy to see how Dayot could be a worthwhile investment for the London club, but one imagines his price tag of £87m, also mentioned by David, would be too much for Arsenal.

It stays to be seen if Arsenal could perhaps talk that down, but others would also argue that this is the state of this market and the London club may have to splash out. Merseyside club spent big on Virgil van Dijk, and it’s massively paid off for them, while Red Devils will hope the same can happen for them with Harry Maguire.

If Gunners want to catch up with their rivals, they need to improve back-line, and a big signing like this may be just what’s needed. The 20-year-old centre-back joined RB Leipzig from RB Salzburg in 2017 with a €10m deal. He has huge potential and can become a top-class defender if he continuous improvement.

The French centre-back has contracted with the Bundesliga giants until 2021. Arsenal set to spend considerable money on the defender as Unai Emery wants to bolster the back-line during the summer transfer window.
