London club are reportedly ready to consider bolstering their defence further as they’ve been paired with interest in Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez. Arsenal were busy trying to shore up their defence this past summer as they snapped up stalwart David Luiz from Chelsea, as they spent £27m on Saliba before loaning him back to France.
In turn, he’ll be back next year to try and offer a long-term solution in back-line for the Gunners, while the likes of Holding and Chambers will also continue to hope to cement their place in the starting XI moving forward.
Amid identifying and taking steps to become a more solid defensive unit though, London club have still conceded 11 goals in only eight Premier League matches so far this campaign. That follows on from conceding 51 in 38 league games last year, giving them the second-worst defensive record of the top nine clubs in the standings.
For a side looking to compete for major titles and across various fronts, that is not good enough, and Spanish tactician will surely be aware of that glaring weakness that still exists in his side. Gunners could swoop for Unai, although it’s noted that it won’t be cheap considering he’s said to have a release clause of nearly £30m.
Further, Everton are also said to be interested in Spain international, and so time will tell whether or not Gunners can fend off the competition and land another important, long-term signing for Unai Emery. It may be considered a risk similar to William in the sense that they’re going for young targets yet to prove themselves in the PL.
