Gunners are considering a move for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres in the winter transfer window in an offer to solve their defensive issues. Spain international scored on his debut for the Furia Roja last night, and he’s quickly emerging as one of the best young defenders in Europe.
Pau has a £43m release clause in his contract, it will be interesting to see if the London club decide to splash the cash after their splurge this past summer. The report reiterates that Arsenal would hope to structure a potential deal for Torres similarly to how they secured Nicolas Pepe from Lille this summer.
Gunners only paid £20m of the total £72m deal upfront. Unfortunately, the London club may have to battle Man City for the 22-year-old centre-back’s signature. The Spanish manager has so far failed to address Gunners’ key shortcoming since being appointed, the club’s defence.
Arsenal are sitting sixth in the Premier League, yet they have the joint-worst goal difference (-1) of sides in the top ten. This isn’t good enough for a team that hope to get themselves back into the Champions League spots.
Spanish defender could prove to be an excellent signing for the London club, the centre-back would add to an already young defensive line that are yet to take shape fully.
Hector Bellerin, Kieran Tierney, Rob Holding and even Calum Chambers have the potential to lead the club in the future. Perhaps the best way to ensure Gunners solve their defensive problems is to install a young foundation of talent at the back-line.
