Arsenal enter the battle to sign €60m-rated French defender

Arsenal and Tottenham are among the host of teams challenging Chelsea for the signature of Jules Kounde. Chelsea are still considered front runners for the Sevilla centre-back, although things could change dramatically in the next transfer windows.

During the summer, the Blues came close to signing France international, only for a late disagreement between the teams over the fee preventing the move. Chelsea are hoping to revisit their interest and possibly make a move for Kounde either in winter or next summer.

Jules has an €80m release clause attached to his deal at the Spanish club, and the Blues had reportedly held a verbal agreement for a lower fee. As the transfer dragged into the last days of the window, Sevilla raised the price and demanded his release clause be paid.

The Blues seemingly ceded their interest despite the 22-year-old defender remaining keen on a move to Chelsea. The German coach admitted the London club stayed keen on signing the French defender, although the boss stays happy even after the transfer failed.

As for the Gunners, they have already bolstered the right side of the defence, with the signing of Ben White and then Takehiro Tomiyasu in the summer. Arsenal might make big additions next summer, potentially a centre-forward and a midfielder, but it’s unclear whether they would splash big on another centre-back.

The Blues might have a clear path unless another club is prepared to pay the Frenchman’s release clause next summer or in winter.
