Arsenal enter the battle to sign €30m-rated Cameroon international

The London giants are set to challenge Barcelona and Inter Milan for the signing of Ajax’ shot-stopper Andre Onana in the summer of 2022. Cameroon international, a former Barcelona youth academy product, left the Catalan club for Amsterdam in the summer of 2015.

After a year of serving as an understudy, Onana became the first-choice goalkeeper for the Dutch club and held the position until earlier this year when the shot-stopper was hit with a doping ban, which he is still serving.

Despite him not playing since March, Andre had attracted interest in the summer transfer window, mainly from the Gunners, but a move never materialised, and the goalkeeper remained out at Ajax. However, the 25-year-old goalkeeper will be out of contract with the reigning champions of Eredivisie at the end of the campaign.

This looks to have sparked a flurry of interest in the Cameroonian shot-stopper. The Gunners bolstered their goalkeeping department this summer with the signing of Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United. In a short time, Ramsdale looks to have replaced Bernd Leno as Arsenal’s first-choice custodian.

Furthermore, with the latter’s deal expiring in 2023, the goalkeeper has been linked with an exit from Arsenal at the end of the campaign. Should the German goalkeeper depart, the Gunners will need to recruit a top shot-stopper to replace him, making the African a viable target, more so considering that he will be available on a free transfer.
