Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly both interested in a possible transfer deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Nuno Mendes. U21 Portugal international has just recently broken into the first-team at Sporting but could already be on his way out of the Liga NOS giants as top European clubs are linked with an interest.
Nuno is being targeted by both Gunners and Merseyside club, who would have to pay his €45m release clause to get a deal done. Mendes could have a big future in the game and could be a useful option for both these PL clubs in the campaign ahead.
The Reds would no doubt benefit from more depth in the left-back position, with Andrew Robertson playing a lot of matches in recent times and summer addition Kostas Tsimikas likely to only be there as cover. The 18-year-old left-back, however, could be the perfect long-term successor to Andrew in that place for many years to come.
Gunners, meanwhile, have the fantastic Kieran Tierney at left-back, but would no doubt see the Portuguese defender as an upgrade on the unreliable Sead Kolasinac as a squad footballer option in that department. Nuno will just be allowed to leave if his buy-out clause is met, which is believed to be in the region of £41m.
That fee could be enough to force both teams to take a step back in proceedings, with Jurgen Klopp open about his side’s inability to match the spending of big-spenders Chelsea.
The London giants manager is looking to strengthen his Gunners squad in the remaining weeks of the campaign, with midfield his priority as Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey stay the perfect options.
