Gunners have reportedly enquired about the availability of Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara, with Liverpool facing contest over his signature. The 29-year-old midfielder, who will be involved in Sunday night’s UCL final against PSG, looked ready for a move to Liverpool this summer but a deal has yet to be completed.
Thiago has one year left on his deal with the Bavarians, who are keen to sell him this summer rather than lose him on a free transfer at the end of next campaign. Bavarians are demanding £23m for Alcantara, which the Reds deem excessive seeing as they could approach him in winter to discuss a Bosman.
With the Merseyside giants stalling over a deal, Gunners have made an approach as Mikel Arteta seems to add to his squad. They also want his price to be reduced. The London club will look to offload the likes of Lucas Torreira and Mohamed Elneny in order to help fund the move.
Per Mertesacker, the head of Gunners academy warned Spain international he would have to adapt if he moved to Liverpool. ‘I can already imagine the transfer, but the midfield axis of Liverpool is set up, Mertesacker said. ‘Getting in there is very ambitious, but he’s a top footballer who can play anywhere.
‘He wouldn’t have any problems with the style of play in England either because he’s a well-trained footballer. He has to adapt and sometimes do a 40-metre sprint to hit a central defender, but he can.’
