The Greek defender Sokratis will be new boss Unai Emery’s second signing since replacing Arsene Wenger at the club last month. Papastathopoulos has been a long-time target for Arsenal but his move finally become a possible past month.
The Borussia Dortmund defender arrived in the UK ahead of his medical in north London. Papastathopoulos was at Arsenal’s training ground and the transfer is expected to be completed in the coming days.
The 29-year-old has been a key player for Dortmund over the past five years since his joining from Werder Bremen. Sokratis also played 79 games for Greece, who failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup in Russia. And the centre-back may be joined at Arsenal by other new transfers in the coming weeks.
Arsenal already signed a right-back, Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juve and Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu has also been linked with the Gunners. And Manchester United star Marouane Fellaini has also become a shock target for Arsenal. The Belgian midfielder is out of contract at Old Trafford this summer and rejecting to sign a new deal at present.
